No, you didn't miss any of these. I did the smart thing after my family had asked for some of my beef jerky a whole two times. I moved the basket out of sight so they'd stop pestering me constantly. That had the unfortunate effect of keeping it out of my sight as well. Anyways, I'm back to the reviews!

Thank you, In-Laws!

Fesperman's Beef Jerky - Peppered Flavor

Description: Large pieces of beef jerky cut to be about two or three bites in size, with visible white chunks of pepper on it. Same as their other batch.

Scores:
Tenderness: 4 out of 5. It is a bit tougher than some previous jerky, but if you try, it will break in half just fine. I like it, which is why it gets the benefit of the doubt on this score but also because it's sat longer than previous beef jerky.
Flavor: 4 out of 5. We've already established my feelings on pepper, and I've lost friends over it. This is a high quality pepper flavor, though. More 'spicy hot pepper' than black pepper, but there's definitely the taste of both.
Overall: 4 out of 5. A point less than the original flavor, and that's because of my lack of friends the pepper.

No Man's Land Beef Jerky - Hot

Description: These are thin strips of meat, about four inches by and inch, maybe a few centimeters thick. They have flakes of red pepper throughout, but generally these are pretty dry and brittle, easy to rip and not greasy.

Scores:
Tenderness: 4 out of 5. A little dry and a little tough, but that's how beef jerky should be.
Flavor: 3 out of 5. Good and beefy taste, but if that's their idea of hot they're operating on some false assumptions. Inara eats this and doesn't even comment on the "heat" it supposedly has.
Overall: 3 out of 5. After the alligator debacle, I was ready to rate this much higher, but as I continued on the bag and picked a few fatty strings out of my teeth, my score dropped a bit. It's still very good beef jerky, though, maybe more of a 3.5.

Dale's Wild West Alligator Jerky - Cajun Style

Description: I can cut and pasted from Yak Jerky because it's pretty much the same as far as appearances go. The package holds four small, maybe two inch by half inch hunks of alligator. Reasonably thick (as opposed to the previously reviewed paper thin jerky). It's a bit oily to the touch, mostly likely the flavoring and marinade. I also wonder if there's any non-cajun style alligator jerky for sale...

Scores:
Tenderness: 3 out of 5. Moist, but very tough.
Flavor: 2 out of 5. You know that really light meaty taste that bad beef jerky has, where you can barely tell it's meat? Replace that with fish taste, and then douse in in a ton of black pepper. That's this.
Overall: 2 out of 5. Well, I've had alligator before, but that was breaded and "nugget" style. This is much less tasty, but I suspect that's why farming alligators isn't nearly as farming cows, chickens, buffalo, or even puppies.

Fesperman's Beef Jerky

Description: These are good size pieces of beef jerky, maybe two inches by four inches each. It's a good dark color. It smells strongly of marinade, even through the bag, but not a "bad" strong, just a "this bag isn't air tight" strong. This does feel a tad bit dry, and not so oily, and you can easily pull a piece apart into a more manageable bite sized piece.

Scores:
Tenderness: 4 out of 5. It's a little dry and brittle, but exactly what you'd want beef jerky to be, not a paper thing soda cracker. It's also a tad bit tough at first, but again, this is how you expect jerky to be. It's not a beef stick.
Flavor: 5 out of 5. Some spices, some beef, and a bit of tang make this the perfect natural beef jerky flavor. If someone asked what beef jerky should taste like, this is the answer.
Overall: 5 out of 5. Well done. If I want to buy a bag of beef jerky to show off, or to take with me on a hike, or generally epitomize this kind of food, this would be it.

Dr. Pepper Beef jerky

Description: First thing I've noticed is that there is a strong sent of generic barbecue when you open the package. The pieces are about two inches a piece, and have a slightly oily consistency. They're also purple. At least much closer to purple than any other cow based product I've encountered.

Scores:
Tenderness: 3 out of 5. Very tender cut of meat, but also somewhat stringy.
Flavor: 2 out of 5. The package tells me it's made with Dublin Dr. Pepper, which is the kind made with sugar instead of whatever the pop industry passes off for soda nowadays. I taste nothing similar to Dr. Pepper in this product. That's not really a bad thing, since it's beef jerky and not a can of pop, but it also doesn't have any distinctively beef jerky kind of flavoring to it.
Overall: 3 out of 5. Clearly this product is trading on the power of Dr. Pepper fans to buy anything with that in the name. I'm not one of those people, but it's adequate jerky.

No Man's Land Beef Stick - Mild

Description: This isn't really "Jerky", but I got it with my basket so it'll be reviewed with it. A five inch by a quarter inch stick of beef, as pictured. A bit oily, enough that I wouldn't want to hold it then use my hands on something else, but not too bad for what it is.

Scores:
Tenderness: 5 out of 5. It's not really jerky, so you wouldn't expect it to be that consistency.
Flavor: 4 out of 5. It's mild, that's for sure. It doesn't really taste like much more than your standard beef sausage, but a well made one, with good beef flavor.
Overall: 4 out of 5. As meat based snacks go, it's pretty satisfying. Certainly higher quality than the sort of thing you'd get as an impulse buy at the beer distributor, but I think these numbers are probably a bit higher than someone expecting jerky would be comfortable with.

1One whole update without using footnotes or turning beef stick into a penis joke!

Hardtimes Real Beef Jerky - Black Pepper Flavor

Description: Large pieces of beef jerky, with visible chunks of pepper on it.

Scores:
Tenderness: 4 out of 5. It breaks in half like other thin slabs of Jerky, and is dryer than the previous one with the same score, but it more of what I expect jerky to be.
Flavor: 4 out of 5. Assuming you want black pepper flavor, you're going to really enjoy this one. The black pepper was a bit stronger than I was expecting, but the original flavor is still prevalent.
Overall: 4 out of 5. I really liked this one, and it probably could have scored a five if it had less black pepper1.

1I'm not a huge pepper fan.

Dale's Wild West Yak Jerky

Description: The package holds four small, maybe two inch by half inch hunks of yak. Reasonably thick (as opposed to the previously reviewed paper thin jerky). It's a bit oily to the touch, mostly likely the flavoring and marinade.

Scores:
Tenderness: 4 out of 5. Much better, more what I'd expect a a piece of jerky to taste like than the last one.
Flavor: 4 out of 5. The package tells me it's hickory smoked, which is what I assume the oily coating to be. Otherwise, Yak doesn't really taste too much different than beef.
Overall: 4 out of 5. I liked it. This is the sort of thing you want when you want a piece of jerky. I don't know if I'd pay a dollar a strip for it when it's not really much different than cow. Still, points to Dale for making good jerky and points for being an interested animal.

[Jerky Review] Ralph's Mexican Bandits Beef Jerky [Dec. 29th, 2011|08:10 am]

I'm starting a jerky review since I got a ton of it. Seriously, check this out:

Thank you, In-Laws!

Ralph's Mexican Bandits Beef Jerky

Description: Large slabs of beef jerky, but they are very thin. I was able to fold the pieces a few times in order to break them into smaller pieces.

Scores:
Tenderness: How dry or soft the jerky is. This is a scale of 1 to 5, five being a steak, one being a cracking piece of aged hardwood. This was a 1.
Flavor: How did it taste? This is a combination of the meat itself and any marinade/seasoning. This one was a 4. It was very spicy, as advertised, and I enjoyed the flavor.
Overall: 2 I started out enjoying it for the flavor, but the pieces were so thin and ended up having large chunks of tasteless fat in them. By halfway through the package, I wasn't really into it. This was good, since Panda, the office dog defeated my 'wooden box' security system and finished it for me overnight. Coincidentally, his water dish was empty when we came in this morning.
